Each year, fifth and sixth graders take the lead in planning Red Clover Day. This is a day in the spring when the whole school comes together to celebrate the ten nominated Red Clover books. Students vote for their favorite book, and together, with students across Vermont state, student votes determine the winner of this award. First they begin by previewing the nominees...Mr. Berthiaume joined Kindergarten Library yesterday and read Locomotive by Brian Floca to the kids. This book presents the history of the building and beginning of the Transcontinental Railroad through a beautiful combination of text and illustrations.
After yet another beautiful Vermont summer, it's time to hit the books... literally. We have new Red Clover books, new Dorothy Canfield Fisher books, science and engineering related books, and of course, loads of FUN books!
Use the FES Catalog button above to browse our list of "NEW Items". If you would like to submit a request for a NEW book, use the button to the right. I look forward to reading with you again this year!
We will keep track of themes and elements of each book on our Red Clover Site.
Once again, our Library is fortunate enough to have the support of the Fayston PTO in purchasing all thirty DCF Award Nominees! Thank you FES PTO!!!
It's hard to believe it's this time of year already... time to start thinking about summer reading goals. This summer, the FES Library will continue our Summer Loan program. Here's how it works: once a student has returned ALL his/her books to the library a permission slip is sent home for summer loans. A signed permission slip is a ticket to 5 summer loans for Kindergarten students and 10 summer loans for 1st-6th grade students. This year, summer loans will be sent home in an FES READS bag; this bag is barcoded and will be returned with the books during the first week of the 2015-2016 school year. Is your student the kind of kid who wants specific motivators to read? I've developed a FES READS calendar to get kids moving. Thank you Mrs. Koch for the idea! Reading over the summer is a great way to relax, unwind, pass travel time, and build a love of reading. Equally as important, summer reading is a way to "bridge the gap" between school years. We want our students to arrive in August ready to grow as readers; they can only do this if they continue to read throughout the summer.
Hungry for more facts and resources? Our "Summer Reading" webpage is chock full. Also check out the ALA Summer Reading Website. This year's Red Clover Day was a hit! Thanks to the absolutely beautiful weather, we were able to host two stations outdoors. Students rotated through the following book-based activities:
Find more information about the books on the VT Department of Libraries website. Wow, what a busy/happy/fun/enriching day! It took the 5th and 6th graders two months of Library time to plan and was a community effort to prepare for. Thank you for sending in ALL of the SpRiNkLeS, toilet paper tubes, felt, and other scavenge- hunt-worthy supplies! Thank you Cheryl for making such a delicious lunch that even our local bear came in for leftovers! VotingThe Red Clover book award is a children's choice award. This means, kids all across Vermont vote for their favorite of the nominated books. The one with the most votes is the winner. This year's state winner was The Day the Crayons Quit written by Drew Daywalt and Illustrated by Oliver Jeffers. The book most popular at FES was Unicorn Thinks He's Pretty Great written and illustrated by Bob Shea. Reading, Understanding, and Planning...We did it! |

Collaboration is doing things differently because we are doing them together. Synthesis works. #vted #anesuvt #VTFest2014
